Have you been feeling stuck lately? Maybe you’ve been feeling frustrated… unmotivated… or like you’re just spinning your wheels in life. If so, you’re not alone. Many people experience this exact feeling right around this time of year. And it’s not a coincidence.
Welcome to Quantum Waves of Wellness. I’m your host, Dr. Paula Apro—Doctor of Natural Medicine, holistic health mentor, and your guide to unlocking the healing power within. Today, I’m going to share a little bit about how the season of spring represents what’s known in Chinese Medicine as the Wood element. And the Wood element is all about growth… movement… expansion… and creating new possibilities.
Let’s just think about what’s happening outside right now. And I guess I should mention that I’m currently located in NC rather than Maine, so my outside is much more “springy” than I’m used to back up in Maine at this time of year.
Here, things are springing to life. The seeds that have been dormant all winter are suddenly pushing up through the soil. Trees that looked lifeless just a couple of weeks ago are beginning to form new buds. Everything in nature is waking up and moving forward. I’m just thrilled to go for walks every day and notice all the amazing changes.
And here’s the most amazing thing … our bodies follow these same natural rhythms. After the slower, more inward energy of winter, spring activates a very different type of energy within us. It’s an energy that wants to move. It wants to grow. And, it wants to create something new.
In Chinese medicine, the organs most closely connected with this springtime energy are the liver and the gallbladder. Now, when people hear “liver,” they usually think about detoxification. And yes, the liver does play a very important role in detoxification.
But in Chinese medicine, the liver has another equally important job. It helps keep the body’s energy moving smoothly.
When liver energy is flowing well, we tend to feel motivated, creative, and clear about where we’re going in life.
But when that energy becomes stagnant, we can feel the opposite. We might feel irritable… frustrated… overwhelmed… or simply stuck.
The gallbladder, which works closely with the liver, is associated with decision-making and courage. So when these two systems are out of balance, it’s not uncommon for people to feel like they can’t move forward with the changes they know they need to make. And all of this can really come to a head during the springtime, making this time of year a bit more uncomfortable for some folks.
The energy of this season is trying to push us forward… but something inside of us may still be holding on to the past. I think we all know what this feels like. I sure do, and it’s something that I’ve been working on for years.
But I saw this year as a huge opportunity to finally change things due to Chinese astrology, and this year is known as the Fire Horse. The Fire Horse is known for its strong drive toward independence and progress. It doesn’t like to be stuck, and the energy of this year will naturally move things along at a much quicker pace.
Fire Horse years have traditionally been associated with bold changes… breaking free from old limitations… and stepping into a new direction in life. If there was ever a year to let go of the things that are holding you back and fully embrace the life you want, IT’S THIS YEAR!
So when we combine the seasonal energy of spring’s Wood element, which encourages growth and expansion, with the energetic symbolism of the Fire Horse, which encourages action and forward movement… we end up with a very powerful opportunity.
Then, when you add the energy of the lunar eclipse that happened on March 3rd, it may well have been one of the most supportive times to finally initiate some positive changes.
I personally took this very seriously and spent most of that night meditating while listening to frequencies, setting intentions, and really trying to let go of the things that I know are not serving me. That very night, I made the decision to sign a lease on an office space back home in Rockland, Maine, and open up a physical location starting this May. I signed the lease on March 3rd, the very day of the huge energetic shift of the lunar eclipse.
It was such an exciting experience for me. I felt like I really put something into motion to help me ride the energy of this Fire Horse to the big changes that I desire. Why not take advantage of the Universal Energy and have it work to our advantage?
Now, please don’t fret and feel like you’ve missed your big opportunity because the lunar eclipse has already passed. We are still very much in the season of spring, and the Wood Element, and the energy of the Fire Horse continues all year.
There are many simple things we can do to support our bodies during this seasonal reset. One of the most important things is simply movement. Remember, the Wood element is all about flow. So gentle physical activity like walking, stretching, or spending time outdoors can help restore that natural movement in the body. Qi Gong is certainly a great way to get energy moving, and it’s my personal favorite.
Nutrition can also play a role. Spring is a time to incorporate lighter foods and fresh greens, and also the best time to practice some gentle detoxing protocols. I always marvel at the fact that Mother Nature gives us a bounty of dandelions every spring because that is exactly what our liver craves during this time of the year. Dandelions are known for their detoxifying qualities, and they help to support the liver and clear out some of the heaviness that can accumulate during winter.
Another powerful step is emotional awareness. If you have stagnant Liver or Gallbladder energy, you may notice yourself feeling more irritable during the springtime. Simply acknowledging those emotions and giving them healthy outlets—whether through journaling, conversation, or creative expression—can make a significant difference.
And of course, one of my favorite tools for helping the body shift out of these stuck patterns is sound. Sound offers a unique ability to influence the nervous system gently and naturally.
When we experience certain frequencies and rhythmic patterns, the body can begin to relax and let go. And when the nervous system relaxes, the body often becomes much more capable of releasing stored tension and restoring healthy energetic flow.
This is why I love my sound healing program. It’s designed to give the body what it needs, exactly when it needs it, throughout the changing seasons. This can help with the natural reset process.
So if you’ve been feeling stuck lately… take a moment to consider that your body might simply be responding to the natural energy of the season.
